CURRENT JOB OPENING - EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
(FULL-TIME, EXEMPT)
Founded in 1961, United Way of Southwestern Oregon (UWSWO) has supported health, education, and financial mobility initiatives on the south coast through fundraising, grant making, and community service programs. Over the last several years UWSWO has grown its local support to include serving as the umbrella organization for Every Child Coos and Every Child Curry, the South Coast Equity Coalition, Southern Oregon Coast Pride, and Coos Hispanic Allies; as the fiscal sponsor of grassroots projects like Coos Waffle Project and Warming Curry; and as a founding partner for the new Coastal Families Relief Nursery.
With growth comes opportunity! Our current Executive Director, Jen Shafer, has chosen to step into a new Finance/Operations Director role to continue to support these programs and partnerships, and the Board of Directors seeks a new Executive Director.
Position: Executive Director
Reports to: United Way of Southwestern Oregon Board of Directors

Summary: The Executive Director provides overall leadership for UWSWO in accordance with the policies, objectives, and guidance of the Board of Directors. The Executive Director works with the Board of Directors to develop and implement the organization’s strategic plan; serves as primary spokesperson and resource development agent for the organization; builds and maintains positive visibility and effective community partnerships in Coos and Curry Counties; support and supervise staffing teams; and oversees day-to-day activities for fundraising programs and events.
Primary responsibilities
Agency management
a) Assist Board of Directors with strategic and annual goal setting and planning; implement activities from strategic plan and regularly report progress to Board of Directors.
b) Ensure compliance with accounting fiscal controls, legal tax status compliance, and policy/procedure accountability.
c) Hire, support, supervise, and evaluate staff; ensure appropriate training and safety of staff and volunteers.
d) Oversee fiscal sponsorships and ensure compliance with annual agreements.
e) Prepare annual budget for Board approval in partnership with finance staff; ensure good stewardship of resources within approved budget.
f) Assist Board of Directors with Board development, with an emphasis on diversity and community representation.
g) Serve as liaison during annual financial audit process.
h) Actively participate in UW Pacific Northwest meetings, activities, and trainings.
i) Ensure compliance with UW Worldwide Membership Requirements.
j) Maintain culture that attracts, retains, and motivates staff and volunteers.Resource development
a) Ensure fiscal sustainability of UWSWO and its programs by leading donor development, identifying applicable grant and fiscal sponsorship opportunities, and establishing other revenue-generating fundraisers.
b) Develop and maintain relationships with companies that support workplace giving opportunities and major donors to solicit donations and contributions.
c) Actively participate in major donor development activities and follow up.Public relations
a) Serve as public face for outreach to all local business, civic, and volunteer organizations; community foundations; and other local charitable giving organizations in partnership with the Finance/Operations Director.
b) Build effective partnerships with nonprofits and community organizations through regular meetings; promotion of agency events, successes, and needs; inclusion in annual campaign and other fundraising efforts; and other collaborative opportunities as appropriate.
c) Advocate for UWSWO’s focus areas by participating in public hearings, penning letters to the editor, meeting with local legislators, and other outreach efforts as appropriate.
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in business, communications, marketing, public relations, or related field and/or a minimum of 4 years working with nonprofit organizational management.
Proven track record of leadership, partnership building, and collaboration.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Oregon driver’s license.
Working Environment
40 hours per week requiring occasional evening and weekend work.
Hybrid work environment. Remote workers will be provided reasonable accommodation for home office setup. This position is expected to travel regularly to meetings in Coos and Curry Counties.
Compensation and Benefits
Salaried exempt position; $65,000-$75,000
Employee-only health, vision, and dental insurance benefits.
Internet and cell phone stipends in accordance with UWSWO policies; mileage reimbursement provided in accordance with IRS standard mileage rate.
Other benefits include vacation accrual starting at 2 weeks/year, sick leave, and other leave options allowable under Oregon law.
