      • 2SLGBTQIA+ stands for 2 spirited, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, question or queer, intersex and asexual ally plus -

      • You will never know all the meanings of all the gendered expressions or gender identities and sexual orientations AND you don’t have to know / understand all to be an ally — if someone shares with you and you don’t know “What does that mean to you?” is a great question

      • June 1969 uprising in New York City has been seen as the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against LGBT Americans but trans women of color were also at the forefront and the San Francisco Compton riots - locally working on shifting to include those individuals in the telling of Pride history

    • Mission statement: To serve as a bridge to historically underserved and underrepresented communities to empower diverse groups to become involved in developing unique, culturally appropriate solutions to pervasive issues of inequity that impact the health outcomes and well being of community members

    • What is Juneteenth and why is it important video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lq8TNKZVEWs

      • Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States

      • June 19, 1865 Major General Gordon Granger announced to Galveston TX the end of the Civil War and the end of slavery

      • Although the emancipation Proclamation came 2 1/2 years earlier on January 1, 1863 many enslavers continued to hold enslaved Black people captive after the announcement, so Juneteenth became a symbolic date representing African American

      • First Juneteenth celebration was held in January because it commemorated the signing of the Proclamation not the announcement in TX

      • Coos History museum has a historical marker for Alonzo Tucker - paid for by SCHEC’s Juneteenth celebration, Equal Justice Initiative out of Alabama and Oregon Remembrance Project

      • 48 states recognize Juneteenth as a federal holiday

      • First year that we have events in 3 locations - Coos Bay, Bandon and Brookings — See flyer for details
