  • Assessment is mandated by the state every 5 years - 23 focus groups (11 in Curry / 12 in Coos) Questionnaires returned 387 in Curry / 382 in Coos

  • Summary:

    • Coos and Curry counties are very similar in numbers

    • Housing is a high concern for both counties

    • Both counties have areas that are considered food deserts (only one grocery store available)

    • Both counties are behind the state average in education

    • Behind state in vaccinations for 2-year-olds and adolescents

    • By 8th grade counties are above state average in tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use

    • Teen pregnancies are declining

    • Spike in student binge drinking that had not leveled out by 2022

    • Curry county has the highest death rate in OR (higher rate of top 5 causes of death) Suicide is the 10th leading cause of deaths for both Curry and OR though Curry County’s death rate by suicide was twice the rate of OR in 20221. Suicide is higher in Coos county as well

    • We have increased our mental health providers while our dentist are at a low

    • Good air quality but our water has had some violations in some areas

    • Distances to receive health care are significant

    • Next Steps: groups will convene to create strategies for improving systems that need attention
