UNITED WAY KICKS OFF THE 2017 “LIVE UNITED: GIVE WHERE YOU LIVE”
FUND RAISING CAMPAIGN
United Way of Southwestern Oregon will kick off its 2017 Annual Fund Raising Campaign Thursday, September 14, 2017 at its Annual Dinner and Fundraiser. The dinner will be held at the Coos History Museum from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm and catered by Joe Benetti formerly of Benetti’s restaurant. Key south coast United Way partner agencies and volunteers will be recognized for their service to south coast residents.
The local United Way is raising money in Coos and Curry Counties to support services provided by local non-profit programs. In 2016, United Way was able to raise $124,000 and has a goal of $150,000 for this year’s campaign according to United Way officials. The campaign runs from September 1 through November 30th and led by Executive Director, Marcia Hart. This year’s theme is “LIVE UNITED: Give where you live” and celebrates United Way’s continued commitment to helping improve the lives of people in our communities. Since 1961, money raised in Coos and Curry Counties stays here helping local people through the more than 50 services the charity’s 24 agencies provide. Among the programs supported are the Women’s Safety & Resource Service, Salvation Army services, T.H.E. House providing food and shelter programs for the homeless and hungry, senior nutrition and health programs, Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts, The Kid’s HOPE Center, Alternative Youth Activities and programs for adults with mental and physical handicaps.
In addition, United Way of Southwestern Oregon is committed to finding new solutions to old problems and is currently the lead agency for the Coos Curry Housing Coalition, a local group of key community businesses, organizations and agencies focused on solving one of our most daunting social crisis-the shortage of housing for people who work in Coos & Curry counties. With a vision of creating a community where everyone has a home, United Way is championing the effort for a Comprehensive Housing Study for Coos County.
United Way of Southwestern Oregon is also known locally for their community service projects including the Day of Caring held each spring which helps seniors and persons with disabilities by performing yard and household chores individuals can’t do themselves. The organization also has a Kids’ Coats and Shoes program to help needy children and teens, grades K-12.
United Way is asking local businesses, employee groups, professionals and individuals to contribute to their effort. The charity has a 10-minute informational presentation detailing their program and would like to talk to local service clubs, businesses, employee groups and others interested in helping or learning more about the non-profit community. Officials note that not only does the money stay here helping local people, it gives you the opportunity to support many worthwhile local causes through one donation.
United Way of Southwestern Oregon is a volunteer based community charity that serves Coos and Curry Counties. Run by an 18-person Board of Directors, each year the agency reviews community needs, selects agencies that meet those needs and distributes money raised in the campaign to them.
